So when we finally learned the true history of this well-loved bottle, we were shocked!
The mystery of one of our most loved shamanic tools ..
Agua de Florida is a well known and trusted cleansing tool used in Plant Medicine journeys, Sound Healings, Soul Retrievals, used to cleanse, clear, ground and energise.
However Agua de Florida began it's life as a leader (and fashionista) in the perfume business in America over 200 years ago!
During the late 1700's an aromatic fashion craze swept through Europe. For thousands of years perfumes had been heavy-scented, oil-based creations which women delicately dabbed on their necks and wrists from elegant glass bottles. But this changed when European fashions shifted and scent transformed into lighter, more transportable, Eau de Colognes and splash ons (alcohol based colognes). Two New York gentlemen, inspired by this trend, decided to create a sweet-scented cologne in 1808 for the North American market.
It's name, Agua de Florida, some say was inspired by a myth suggesting that the Fountain of Youth lay in the state of Florida. Others say that Agua de Florida was initially 'made in Florida' and hence the name. Either way "Florida Water" began it's life as a humble American Cologne to then become one of the most revered spiritual tools in the world!
When i first read these words, I must admit that I was surprised that this 'sacred tool' of mine had less than sacred origins!
It still remains a mystery how this American Cologne became so popular in South America and then internationally into Shamanic circles. I believe production went to Peru, due to cheap labor, and naturally found it's way into the hands of local communities and thus their ceremonies.
Shamanic Traditional uses
Indigenous Shamans believe that plant spirits enjoy the sweet scents of perfumes and it invites them to come to play with you, Whilst the alcohol also serves to protect you against the bad spirits and keep you clear in your own energy field while you journey within. Sacred and Holy waters have also been used in many tribes and cultures in the same way.
Traditional use of these Ritual Cleansers is for Shamans to put a little in their mouths and, with positive Intention, they will spit the liquid with force over your body or energy field. This is a very grounding and powerful experience, and releases stagnant energy from the body and brings you into presence.
They may also pour a few drops of the liquid over your body and invite you to breathe in the aroma which also grounds and clears through your sensory organs.
Additionally Shamans may put a little on your third eye - to help open your awareness - or to close it at the end of ceremony. Also over crystals, their alter or shaken into a room or space to cleanse the energy
The combination of working with positive intention, engaging with the spirit of the plants in the bottle, sharp noises and the cleaning nature of alcohol is what is shifting energy and clearing the field.
